Alright, assignment number one. I don't mean to preach or to in any way lay a bummer on you guys, but perhaps you might want to click on the link above and find out ways you can help out. That's all. So now that we've gotten that out of the way, I just wanted to let you guys know that a little something I like to call SHINDIG is going down tomorrow night. There's a website up for more info, but for now just know that it's going to be, without exception, an enormous amount of drunken, rocking and rolling debauchery. Last time Shindig rolled around, I thought to myself, Wow, the boys at Shindig really know how to assemble a good bill. But this week's party hammers that point home. This week, ladies and gents, Shindig has upped the ante to bring you the following awesome names in rock: THE ISLES, A.R.E. WEAPONS, LIONS AND TIGERS, and SIGMOND DROID. As if that weren't enough, Bronques from Lastnightsparty.com will be there to document the whole thing for posterity, and an original Vivienne Westwood T-Shirt exhibit will be there as well. Not enough spice for you? Well then the ultimate in sexy DJs (aka the Misshapes crew) will be there too. It's been a little crazy for me lately, thus the lack of reviews for the CMJ shows that I saw (read: The Sexy Magazines and The Harlem Shakes. I never said I wasn't predictable). But know this: The Sexy Magazines did not escape adversity during their CMJ performance. But they rose above it all marvelously and put on a show that I feel was one of their best. They're one of the best rock bands in New York City, a part of the elite, and if you haven't seen them by now, why not pop over to 64 Gansevoort St. btwn. Washington and Greenwich Sts. tomorrow night to have a gander? If you're a real square and you hate the music, just go for the free hooch. But if you have a rock and roll soul, you won't be disappointed. The Sexy Magazines' Music Page Let me just add that I heart The Isles, and have for quite the while. In particular, their songs "Fuck" and "True South" hit a chord with me. Both are off of their remarkable EP, "Back To Terrific". Also, their music was apparently used in the documentary film "The Education Of Shelby Knox", which is an intriguing look into the "moral values" issue post-Apocalypse (or, as you conservatives call it, post-the Bush Victory of 2004), specifically the issue of abstinence-versus-safe-sex education in schools. The Isles' Myspace Page And what can you say about A.R.E. Weapons that hasn't already been said. So fucking great. A.R.E. Weapons: "Don't Be Scared" A.R.E. Weapons: "Hey World" Lions & Tigers, like many of our animal bands (The Giraffes, Elefant, Hot Snakes and Le Tigre, to name but a few) are good, solid rockers as well. Lions & Tigers Website And you know, it's worth mentioning that these bands have amazing prowess with lyric-writing. True wordsmiths, we've got here. A sampling: "Hey this whole world/This is a message to you/Your kids are growing up with nothing to do/And a bored kid/Is a dangerous kid/Did you see it on the news?/Did you see what they did?"- A.R.E. Weapons. "I don't give a shit/Kill them all and conquer it/I don't give a shit/Kill them all and conquer it/" -The Sexy Magazines. [Might I add that the rest of the song ("War Baby") carries eloquent and painfully true messages on war and our C.I.C., but you will have to strain your ears on the CD-version, as the mix favors the guitars a bit more than Franco's peals. Watch for it live though, as you'll see Marc the guitar player a) spin great riffs and b) wiggle around in a delightful manner]. "I'd be dead/But there's nothing worth fighting for"-The Isles. I hate to go film geek on y'all, but starting the 28th, Lincoln Plaza Cinemas and our very own LES Jewel, Sunshine Cinemas are putting on Michelangelo Antonioni's 1975 drama "The Passenger". It stars one Ms. Maria "I like to roll around naked with Marlon Brando in Paris" Schneider and Jack Nicholson, who needs no middle-name introductions. Worth seeing folks. Or, on the opposite side of the spectrum, you could wander over to BAM Cinemas on All Saints Day (November 1st for you pagans) and see Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket" screened. And if you make it through all the carnage and Adam "My Bodyguard" Baldwin-induced madness, you can ask Matthew Modine about his experiences, as he'll be there promoting his excellent book of photographs and notes about the filming of said Kubrick film. OR...you could go to the Alice Tully Hall for the Shostakovich Centennial Chamber Music festival this weekend...Hold on, I just need to push my black Coke-bottle glasses up my nose...
